HISTORY

"Berean History On Wednesday, November 10, 1976, Berean Bible Fellowship was founded by Dr. Herman Conley, Deputation Secretary for Carver Foreign Missions. What began simply as a Bible Study in the summer of 1976 to encourage believers who had been impacted by the active teaching and preaching ministry of Dr. Conley throughout the Atlanta, Georgia metro area, ignited a desire to gather for prayer and eventually for the founding of new fellowship. The first service of the new church was held in Dr. Conley’s house on Sunday, November 14, 1976, with Rev. Adessa Williams serving as the assistant pastor and Dr. Conley as the pastor. The name of the church was eventually changed to Berean Bible Baptist Church.

Dr. Conley’s deep, abiding passion for the spread of the gospel throughout the world was reflected in the life and ministry of Berean from its very beginning. Early on Berean committed significant portions of its budget to both foreign and home mission works, so that the Gospel would reach the ends of the world. The support of missions continues to be an important facet of Berean’s identity and commitment.

For the first two years, Berean meet in Dr. Conley’s home and then in October 1978, the church moved to 3704 Campbellton Road, where it remained for the next sixteen years. The ministry of Berean continued to expand throughout this term with the church developing effective ministries to itself and to others in the community. As the church expanded, the need for a new building was clear and in August of 1994 Berean moved into its present facility at 3515 Butner Road, SW, Atlanta, Georgia.

In February 1996, Berean suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Dr. Herman Conley, our founder and pastor for 20 years. Rev. Wallace Francis served as interim pastor for two years, until our present pastor, Roger W. F. Skepple assumed the pastorate of Berean Bible Baptist Church in May 1998.

Pastor Skepple has been involved in Christian ministry for over twenty years. He is a graduate of Word of Life Bible Institute, Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Religion with a major in Pastoral Ministry and a minor in Biblical Studies (Magna Cum Laude), and Dallas Theological Seminary with a Master of Theology degree with a double major in New Testament Literature and Exegesis and Systematic Theology Studies (Honors). He is married to Teresa, also a graduate of Liberty University, and they have four children.

Under his leadership Berean has made great strides experiencing strong expositional preaching of the Word of God, seeing continued growth and maturity, transitioning to eldership, bringing on a full time associate pastor, Patrick Perkins, and a reorganizing of the church for future impact in the community and the world. We are convinced as a church that as we remain faithfully committed to the clear teaching and living of the Word of God, the life line of Berean, that God will continue to bless her to know Christ and to make Christ known.
